Couplet

I've gotten to watch you grow
and now it's time to go.

You're all pretty neat
which makes this bittersweet.

I have to go today
but I really wish I could stay

Treat Mrs. Nabors right
try with all your might.

I know you'll do your best
next week on the STAAR test!

Limerick/ Free verse

THE BLUE DOG

There was a shaggy dog that was blue.
His color was a bit taboo.
He lived in a town
where blue made  you frown,
when people saw him that's all they could do.

One day on the road
he met a green toad
that was lucky as green should be.

As they walked along
the dog sang a song
of the troubles of being blue.
The toad listened politely
as he hopped along lightly
thinking of what he could do.

They came to a fork in the road
near the pond that was home to the toad.
There came a thought
which didn't happen a lot
to help the dog lighten his load.

The toad pushed him in
with soap and a grin
and told him to wash and scrub
and then he exclaimed "Don't forget the dubba dub dub!"
What a disaster that would have been!

when the dog was done
he got out and spun
to see what difference the bath had made
he was elated and exclaimed
"What great magic you have done!"

The dog was now gold
what a sight to behold!
It was color the town
could not put down
for this was an event untold.

Summer's almost here!
People all feel cheer
Right now flowers prepare to bloom
I can't wait to see them grow
Now everything is turning green
Gone is the cold.

How wonderful this time
Around Easter
Something we celebrate in many different ways.

Small animals are waking from their sleep
Preparing to make the world
Ready and new and pretty
Underneath the soil a
New seedling is ready to break the surface
Gaining life in the bright yellow sun

My favorite color!

My favorite color is purple.
I like all shades of purple. Pastels, lavender, dark purple, plum, and the rest in between. When I was younger my mom asked me "What is your favorite color?" I told her purple, green, and blue because those were my favorite colors to draw with. She told me I could pick one to paint the walls of my room and guess which color I picked? PURPLE! She was very nervous about this color at first but I was dead set on a purple room. When I went away for Girl Scout camp that summer my whole family painted and decorated my room in purple! It was the best surprise ever!

I also like the color Purple because it represents royalty in many cultures.  The color purple is often associated with nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and MAGIC!

                             *How to knit a scarf*

Step 1. Get some knitting needles and yarn. The needle size depends on the type of yarn you get. You can find the codes for this on the package of your yarn.
Step 2. Pick a pattern. We will go over the ribbed stitch for beginners today.

Step 3. Make a slip knot by grabbing the yarn and making a loop around your thumb and pointer finger. Pull the tail of the string so that it will make a loop.

Step 4. Cast on (make) 20 loops on your needle.

Step 5. To make a knit stitch you place your string behind your needles, insert the right needle in the front of the stitch to the back. Wrap the yarn around the right needle and pull it through the loop.
Step 6. Drop the loop from the left needle.

Step 7. Next make a purl stitch you place the yarn in front of your work. Insert your right needle in the front of the loop on the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the inserted needle and pull through the loop.
Step 8. Drop the loop from the left needle.
Step 9. continue to alternate between the knit and purl stitch until you have the desired length.
Step 10. When you reach the end of your scarf you will cast off (end the scarf).

Step 11. To cast off you will knit and purl your first two stitches as regular. Then you will take your left needle and place it in your first stitch on your right needle and pull it over the second stitch and off the needle.
Step 12. You continue to knit/ purl and drop stitches until you reach the end of the row. Make a knot and enjoy your scarf!

Slice of Life 2/27

Last semester, one of my professors had the class keep a journal and we would write in it for 10 to 12 minutes every morning. When I started interning full time I kept up my journal every morning. I like to do my journal everyday because it helps me clear my mind and prepare for the day. There's always a lot going on in my life and being able to put it on paper is relaxing.

Today during my journal time it started snowing. The whole class was excited to see the snow. At first there were only a few flurries sprinkling the grass but soon it grew. I always like the snow because in Texas we don't get much. Snow always causes us to slow down we look out of the window and think. During my journal time i thought about my plans for the weekend, what my family was doing in the snow in Arlington and just sat in awe of its beauty. Its nice to see something as simple as frozen water change the surface of earth as it accumulates.

S nuggling up with books ad cocoa
N ice and warm inside
O nly thinking of the beauty
W ith friends and family

D on't dare go outside
A void the cold
Y ou be my guest but I

top 10 books

                     Top 10 favorite books

1. Bud, not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis
This has been on of my favorite books since I was younger. I got it from a book fair when I was in girl scouts. This book really sparked my hunger and interest for reading. Its about a boy who is searching for his father. He lives in a foster home and one day he leaves with a suitcase of clothes and two flyers as his only direction. As I read this book I learned about determination, love, and the importance of family.
2.In the time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
This book is about 3 sisters who rebel against a dictator in the Dominican Republic. During the time of their rebellion it was unsafe to speak against the president. You learn bravery, loyalty, and how to stand up for what you believe.

3.The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis
This book is set during the Civil Rights movement. Its a coming of age story for a young boy learning right and wrong and how to stand firm on his beliefs. Truly a touching story that is relevant to any reader.
4. Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
I read this book when I was in high school. Its a tragedy written by Shakespeare about a military man that rises to power and how the power corrupts him and those around him. The most memorable part of this book for me was the line ¨beware the ides of march¨. The ides of march is march 15th. This was a warning by a seer that Julius would be betrayed on this day. Every march I tell people to Beware the ides of March!

5.Copper Sun by Sharon Draper
a book about escaped slaves and indentured servants doesn't seem so relate-able until you meet Amari, Polly, Tidbit, and Noah. Its a story about perseverance, right and wrong, and looking to a promising future.
6. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love. Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate.
7. Pretty Little Liars Series  by Sarah Shepard
I started reading this series in high school when the TV show first aired. I like the suspense and the different turns the writer takes you through. I also like that the TV show is not identical to the books so nothing os given away if they read but didn't watch and vice versa
8. A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstien
This book was my first encounter with poetry that I enjoyed. the author has a way of making light of many subjects and has a great control of words. He reminds me of Dr. Seuss because he plays with words and ideas that are relatable to readers of all ages.

9. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
This book is about how appearance can fool you. So many times we judge people on what they look like or wear before we know what they are like on the inside. There are so many valuable lessons to learn from this book. Such a great read!
10. Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen
I just read this book in the library. I was initially attracted to it because the cover art was interesting. Its written in two points of view giving the reader two main characters. I love the way it is written and it taught me to try and change my perspective. I never know what's going on in another person's head until I ask.
